  • Thanks Jenny, I've not had much time this weekend to look at the BBC magazine, so it is good you picked it up as I would have missed it. :)
  • interesting points, both in the article and the comments. I go with the person who says we read to learn, not solely for the feelgood factor. That needed to be said.
  • Have you all joined 'Campaign for the book' championed by Alan Gibbons, children's author? He is fighting library cuts all the way.
  • It's a great pity. The people who want to save money by closing libraries possibly know the price of everything, but certainly know the value of nothing. I think there's an assumption made by people that physical books don't matter any more because we have the internet and ebooks, that libraries don't matter because books are cheap in supermarkets, and reference books and librarians are no longer required because of the existence of Google.

    Sadly, even schools sometimes fall into this way of thinking. See, for example:

  • my libarary is useless anyway. All books are unavailable and they dont' buy more copies, I'd happily pay if the services were improved. Eg. books in sections, more books.
