New website

edited April 2011 in - WM and WN
Hello everyone,
It seems like a very long time ago, but some of you may remember I mentioned a new look website on its way...
I'm very pleased to say that http://www.writers-online.co.uk will be going live in the next few weeks (for now you'll just see a holding page if you visit that link).
The new site will have some new and extra content, and we've got a lot of exciting things planned for the future.
Unfortunately, when the new site goes live, Talkback will still be in its current form, but the long-awaited revamp is coming. We thought it best not to hold up the relaunch to wait for the extradordinarily complicated redevelopment of the forum.
Anyway, we hope you enjoy the new look, when you can get into it, and look forward to hearing your thoughts

• I'll look forward to that, Webbo.

The old one was looking rather tired and is now more out of date than the things at the back of my fridge!
• "Talkback, the friendliest writing forum on the internet"

Do they mean us?

*gulps*
• Sounds good, Webbo.
• Ooer.
Do they mean us?
Erm, most of us, BB.

Looks good, Webbo.
• All good news. Fingers crossed for a smooth transition.
• How exciting. Have to admit I feel a bit worried about TB changing, although I know we have issues.
• Looks good. Perhaps there will be some more recent poetry comp winner's poems on there too, the ones on the site at the moment are a bit ancient.

Me too, especially if it means my current whispered discussions are lost in the redevelopment. It's one of the main reasons I come on TB.
•
Perhaps there will be some more recent poetry comp winner's poems on there too
Certainly will KA... should be an archive of more than 10 winning entries when we relaunch, with more to add very quickly... plus regular, frequent, updates. Yay!

Re Talkback, obviously we'll try to refine it as much as possible, without breaking the bits you love, but it's still very early stages so I can't yet say (not won't, just can't!) how it will all shape up.
• Can we advertise our Kindle books on the new site?
• We're very keen to offer subscribers' books and ebooks for sale through the site, but that's not something we'll have straight away (although having seen tentative plans, I think what will eventually come should make up for the wait). That said, if it's specifically for *Kindle* you're trying to sell, all you're after is a link through to Amazon... which could be featured within a members' news story, if you fancy sending us an update on your latest news.

Oh.
• Looks posh. Hope this site does not change to much though . I have come to know and love it.
• it looks great i can't wait to see it up and running :)
• Posh? That's me out then. :(
• Exciting stuff Webbo - thank you.
• I seemed to have missed this completely! Is TB changing? Do I have to learn my way around yet another site? (groans)

Oh well I suppose it is what they call progress but no soon than I get the hang of something it seems to change. I shall have to find some time to read some more threads on here but at the moment I literally just dip in and out and pick the odd thread out (sometimes at random).

I would say TB is the friendliest forum I am on but that doesn't mean much because it is about the only one I go on and definately the only one I go on regularly. lol ;)
• I think TB forum will transfer as it is Gina, there will be changes in the future no doubt. But the change is for the existing writers news website.
• I hope Webbo will still appear!
• Posh and friendly? Will any of us make it over?
• The sample page looks great - I hadn't noticed how outdated the current site has become until I looked at the link.
• Of course we will BB, what would TB be like without us all ????
• Non-existent? :)
• Hey Webbo! That is one seriously posh website. Does it mean we'll all have to get dressed properly before we log in?
• will all the posts off TB go over to the new TB ?

I don't think Webbo should wear his white coat any more. I think he should ditch the lab technician specs, and get himself a hot new web developer image. A geek-style pony tail is allowed.

Let's have a poll on whether Webbo should have black-rimmed glasses and a geeky style pony tail.

PBW votes yes.
• In the interests of equality, do you think there should also be a Webberta on the site?
• definitely!
•
Posh and friendly? Will any of us make it over?
Yes - the ones who specialise in fiction ;-)
•
should also be a Webberta
yes, of course. There may well be one already but she doesn't have her own TB user account. I hope Webbo is not generic. I hope he REALLY is REAL, like Father Christmas.

'Mummy'
'Yes, dear?'
'Johnny at school told me Webbo doesn't exist. Johnny said Webbo is only a user name in a web application, like in facebook. It's not true is it?'
'Of course not dear. Everyone knows Webbo exists, otherwise we wouldn't be able to talk to him on Talkback. Don't take any notice of nasty Johnny.'
'Does Webbo know Father Christmas?'
'Yes dear. He looks after Father Christmas' web site and feeds the reindeer when Father Christmas is too busy to do it.'
'Mummy...'
'Yes dear?'
'

"wonders what "getting dressed" means"
• The new site looks great; a really 'clean' and modern design. Looking forward to it going live.

I like the look of the old Webbo. He looks intelligent!
•
He looks intelligent!
Oops - reading too fast again. I thought you said "he looks belligerent" !!
• Waits and sees.
I don't think Webbo is a nerd so I don't see why he has to look like one!
;)
•
it looks great i can't wait to see it up and running :)
Sorry to go back on topic but I just looked at the link and think the new page looks very professional, modern and I love the colour. Can't wait to see the new site live.
• Exciting times!. Hope TB continues in much the same way. I find it far simpler to use than most fora

Yes I agree. It's the only one I've found which feels like real conversation.
• Love the new look! How exciting :)
• This is what I get if I try to go to the link!

This Connection is Untrusted
You have asked Firefox to connect securely to www.writers-online.co.uk, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.
Normally, when you try to connect securely, sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are going to the right place. However, this site's identity can't be verified.

What Should I Do?

If you usually connect to this site without problems, this error could mean that someone is trying to impersonate the site, and you shouldn't continue.
• I get that too!
• I know it's safe, so you could proceed and add the exception, but I realise that my assurance might not actually make you feel better!
Somehow, the http:// link I gave is rerouting to https:// , which is why Firefox is bothered about the security. I'll pursue it with our techies in case they know something I don't, but suspect all will be hunkydory by the time the site goes live anyway.
• Hi everyone. Thought I'd pop by as I've five mins to catch up on things. Found this and thought I'd give it a go too and yes, I get the same as everyone else using firefox. I can us https:// on other sites and don't get the message from Firefox.
• Okay... yes, it is something which has to happen before the real site goes live, getting the security certificate in order, which has yet to come through.
It doesn't matter, since the https protocol is for secure input and sensitive data, and all you can currently get to is a static page with nowhere to input anything, so accepting it as insecure would be okay, but if you're at all bothered, or not sure how to allow Firefox to go through, just hold off for now and the real site should be secure and ready for you in the very near future!
• Quite right Butterfly... any live site you visit using https should ALWAYS have a current security certificate, and ring your alarm bells if it doesn't.
• I knew I could trust Webbo really!
• I went through to the site without that happening, through Firefox too.
•
I get the same as everyone else using firefox.
Me too, whereas I didn't get the security warning when I clicked on the link a couple of days ago.
