Christmas 2012 is here!

edited August 2012 in Off-topic
I went into the shop Card Factory today to get my grandson a birthday card and couldn't believe it when I saw Christmas cards have taken over a whole section!

• Our cheap and cheerful store has got Christmas decorations, cards and diaries on display.
• Nowadays for Christmas I read Commercial moneymaking season
• They must be desparate, they usually wait until September...
• I wrote a piece for the online business magazine yesterday, which is published on 19 Aug - it contains themes of Christmas and growing spuds for 'the day'! It felt odd writing (and thinking) about CD whilst in the middle of August.
• How dare they the c .c cc..c..

c.c..c.

c..c..ccc.ccc

christmas giblets that they are!
• There should be a law against it no Xmas displays until when? November? If they can legislate Sunday opening times why can't they do that?
• I would say November would be a good time to start - it is just so dumbed down and diluted by shoving it out at us in August/September!
• Luckily they leave it until the summer is over here.
If I recall correctly, there's no sign of Christmas until at least November.
BUT - I shall be in the UK next month and may well have Christmas presents for local friends on my shopping list - I just don't need the Jingle Bells to remind me.
• I've always been a firm believer that Christmas starts half-an-hour before the shops shut on Christmas Eve. That allows adequate time for the selection and purchase of presents, and coincides nicely with the custom of popping in to the pub on the way home for a pre-Christmas drink.
• Yes, snailmale and you can buy the presents at reduced prices too, if you leave it til then!
• Our local Costcutters has had Christmas wrapping paper on display since immediately after the Easter weekend.

Never thought of that. I could always give folk IOU's on Christmas morning, and buy even cheaper at Boxing Day sales, it's only a matter of a day isn't it?

Actually, some of it is a bit tatty, and I strongly suspect that some of it is left over from last Christmas.
• We've been talking about, and planning for sometime, the December issue of Grace, the magazine which I edit. Commisioned articles for December have to reach me by mid-October. It's hard to think about Christmas so far ahead. I've not seen Christmas cards on sale yet.
• Sad to say that Christmas cards have been on sale for several weeks here Stan. When I am PM I will pass a law to ensure that Christmas items are not permitted to be sold or displayed until the Monday after Armistice Day.
• In France, Christmas happens at Christmas. The shops go into party mode in December. There's no mad panic, no frantic shopping (except for ready-prepared-to-order platters of food) and very little commercialism. And no endless replays of Slade's Merry Christmas, or Frosty the Snowman. And as for cards - they just don't do them as we do. They send to nearest and dearest only - no huge lists of everyone you've ever met but daren't cast off in case you bump into them again, or relos your mother doesn't want you to offend, even though you last met them in 1977 and didn't like them.

Oh yes, we have a few of those alright!
• First one to hear the Slade record this year post here!
• Last night I ventured out to the bright lights of Blandford Forum. There's a shop in the main street called Deck The Halls. It's been there for some time, apparently and had the most beautiful display of Christmas decorations I'd ever seen. My friend and I spent ages pointing out different things to each other.

We only passed it because it was a busy night and our usual parking spaces weren't available.

It made us feel excited, like young children might be at Christmas. It was tasteful and magical. I need to go back early next year and see if they sell different decorations, but I almost hope they don't.
• Did you see my poem about wanting a Porsche for Christmas?
•
Last night I ventured out to the bright lights of Blandford Forum.
Cor, it must have changed a lot since I visited a few years ago...
• Well, I may have over-egged that - bright compared to where I live...?
•
Well, I may have over-egged that - bright compared to where I live...?
Now in that case...yes, bright lights would probably be about right then...:)
• Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I haven't had my summer swims yet. I refuse to think about the 'c' word before November.
• I just went to the Co-op and saw chocolate selection boxes and chocolate Father Christmases on the shelves.
Anyone heard the Slade song yet? Or any Xmas music in shops?
•
I refuse to think about the 'c' word before November.
I don't think about it until C word until C-eve, then by C-day it's over.
• Brother in Brisbane saw Christmas things in the shops this weekend, too. It won't happen in France until December.
I suppose people want to spread the cost of shopping when things are tight, but couldn't the supermarkets keep this stuff in a far-flung corner of the store, out of sight of those who prefer their Christmas with a touch of winter about it?
• I will admit I am already thinking about my Christmas list now because of all the DVDs I'd like but can't afford because of Uni and because Uni itself.

Otherwise, I don't really care.
•
It felt odd writing (and thinking) about CD whilst in the middle of August.
Slade's 'Merry X'mas everybody' was actually recorded in the summer heatwave of '73 (in NY).

Personally, I can't wait to experience that adrenalin rush of last-minute Christmas shopping; that magical time when snow is in the air, the sun sets to leave a cold grey sky punctured by soft electric glows and there's the overwhelming smell of petrol on the forecourt.
•
Otherwise, I don't really care.
Me either.
• I saw the Ch++++++as display at the card shop in town last week
And to add to this, an e-mail from my sis in Oz said she saw her first ad for Ch+++++as on tv two weeks ago.
Where's my massive duvet, I'm under it till its all over.
I went to buy myself a book by Tom Sharpe- The Middern, contemporary and very funny...and I think until
the New Year comes I'm going to read a lot more of his books. Goodness knows I can do with some humour
in my life right now.
• They had a shelf full of Ch*****as stuff today in Tesco. Shocking!!
• Gasp.... not Tesco....well what a suprise, not that I'm saying they are grasping or anything..
• I went into both TEsco and Asda this week and Both had those big tins of quality street and Roses, etc at the doorway absolutely masses of them for a fiver each.

When they go down to £3 or less, grab them, 'cos that offer only lasts a couple of days and they both have them on at the same time.
•
They had a shelf full of Ch*****as stuff today in Tesco. Shocking!!
Mum said they had them in since the beginning of August I believe. They always have it in early, I think even before the Halloween period.
• The OH's daughter said there's a Santa's Grotto at Asda - or maybe Tesco = and selves trawling the streets with Christmas flyers.

Bah humbug!
• It's enough to make you want to leave the planet and go on vacation to another galaxy to get away from it all.

Yes come to Kitten meow meow land instead but bring your own tinsel as I like to chase sparkly things
• I sense desperation in the marketing department, as they try to entice cash-strapped shoppers to spend more. Unfortunately, they (and the gov) will have to learn that the contemptible electorate has no money left, after the increases in the cost of living. They will have to learn where the limits are. If cost of living goes up, and wages go down (assuming you have a job), there's no money to spend! It's not rocket science.

That's what I reckon too.

I'm not buying those big tins of sweets at a fiver a go. Honestly, I am waiting for them to be reduced, and they will be.
•
I'm not buying those big tins of sweets at a fiver a go.
I've always EATEN those big tubs of sweets in one go (more or less) - and paid a fiver for the privilege!!

I'm not eating any this year . . .
•
I'm not eating any this year . .
*sniggers*
•
*sniggers*
Snickers, more like. No. My lips are sealed. I cannot and will not be tempted.

Best offer I've had in a while!
• This year I am planning to get everything ordered the first week of November, put away until c eve and not have to stress. Although to be fair the kids will probably have money, there isn't really anyone to buy for other than that and there will only be four of us for christmas dinner. Am wondering about going out for it instead.
• Mince pies are in the supermarket now.
• Last week I went into town and BHS have all their Xmas range out but I have not heard any Xmas songs in shops yet.
