Writer's website

edited November 2014 in Writing
Hi People,

I'd like to ask for a bit of advice. I guess most of you have your own websites. Well, I'm about to set up mine. Nothing very big, I'd put my short stories there and I might have a little blog section.
So my questions:
Which hosting company do you use?
Do you use the host's website builder or some software?
Thanks

  • Hello, Balazs.

I don't have a website yet, but I do have a blog. So I don't have any answers to your questions, though I suspect your second question might depend on how techie capable you are.
  • I use a green host but can't recall who they are.

My website (set up professionally) is Wordpress and so is my blog (done by me).

    Website: http://www.poetlizbrownlee.co.uk

    Blog: http://www.lizbrownleepoet.com

The things about Wordpress is it is easy to use (if you haven't used Blogger and aren't 'in' to that way of doing things). It looks professional and you can make your website look different from everyone else's easily - Blogger sites all look the same to my eyes.

Google LOVES Wordpress and it is easy for any of your posts to get seen.
  • I don't have a website, I have a blog. http://patsy-collins.blogspot.co.uk
It does everything I'd want from a website, doesn't cost me anything, is easy to use and I can instantly update it as often as I like.
  • (Should mention the website did cost me to set up, Wordpress did not, but I do pay to have my own address - because I think it looks more professional to just have my name .co.uk - plus it doesn't take up as much room on things like business cards etc.)
  • I use a free wordpress blog (i.e. not self-hosted). Extremely easy to use.
    http://sallyjenkins.wordpress.com
  • I would also recommend Wordpress.com. Not only do they provide the software you need to design your site but they host it too. For a basic site (which is more than capable of doing what you want to do) it's all free.

I'd be very wary about using the design software provided by most other hosting services. If you ever want to move away from them in future (for example when they ramp up the price as they tend to do) it can make things quite tricky.
  • I have many websites and I use UK2 you get full control of your Cpanel which is very important and free web builder. some sites are just 5-6 pages others are 300-400 pages and my sites are 95% faster than others. if anyone wants to check their own site for speed and performance go to www.who.is then click the website info tag. this site is free and no signing up it is solely used for statistics so not a spam related site.
  • That isn't a website, HA. Can you give the proper address?
  • Hi Balazs - I use WIX you can use thier tools to design your own look and it costs very little (you can do it for free but might have to pay to register your domain name) they do that for you too.

I use wordpress for blogs - great for that - don't blog a lot too busy working and would rather write my stories than blog loads.

    hope that helps...

Not sure which one you mean but my server is www.uk2.net
and the other one is just http://who.is/

  • Ah, that took me to it. But you have to sign up.

This is an example of a completely free Wix website, Balazs.

AHH I was thinking more along the lines if you did not already have your domain name then that's where UK2 come into it. you get the free web design when you buy your domain from them. off the top of my head a dot com is about £6.99.
