I posted a question on a new discussion thread a while ago. It's gone! I am not spam!
I think I am the guilty one. Over zealous zapping of the threads too quickly. I'm so sorry.

    And still they come.

Blimey! Unrelenting buggers aren't they? I think we'll have to learn to just ignore them.

(That's ignore the spam, not Tam.)
  • TBH, that's what I've been doing. We know how to spot them. On a different note, apparently Viagra's in short supply at the moment. Perhaps we could source some and open up the market and make a killing?
  • Thanks Tam.
  • Yeah thanks Tam
    TB's spam zapping man

I am willing to be the sacrificial lamb for the sake of the greater good...
  • We're sinking.
  • 26 atm... every time i go back another has arrived!
  • Someone needs to do the nightshift.
  • Someone needs to tighten control on how ppl join up
  • Think I might go pull a pillow over me head and ignore it all till morn
  • Four pages of spam now
  • And more arriving all the time.
  • Any potential new members will see nothing but spam posts and requests from us to bring in a system which stops so many of them being posted. I doubt many will be tempted to join.

  • They'd been removed by the time I posted my last comment –but another appeared immediately and they'll probably be another half page before I finish typing this.
  • 9.14 Yes, there's a lot!

Tam must feel like the boy with his finger in the dyke.
  • I'm on it. Not sure how to actually prevent this but we'll hopefully figure something out
  • This has only increased since the new version of Talkback was introduced.

There's obviously something that needs attention to stop spam entering and it isn't being addressed firmly enough.
  • Talkback hasn't been changed with the recent redesign - it must be coincidental, but I'll investigate some new measures (probably making it harder for normal people to sign up) that ought to stop it.
  • It's a pain, but in order to stop spammers you do have to make it a bit harder for genuine people to join the site and be able to comment.
  • I've switched on an option to require new users to be manually confirmed before they can do anything but I'm not sure how effective it's going to be - unverified members were never supposed to be able to post in the first place. Also banned a bunch of users and deleted some posts but if there's anything else please let me know.
  • Thank you, Webbo. It is such a strange thing to do. Perhaps somewhere there is a school of computer nerds who are being trained to hack government files and one of the steps is invading websites and posting spam. This year they have a lot more members than usual...
  • Thanks, Webbo.

  • Just in case anyone's wondering. Shutting the door on new arrivals (I think!) hasn't silenced spambots which were already registered, which is why we're still getting new posts popping up. So I'll just be playing whack-a-mole for a while.
  • Thanks Webbo. Hopefully it will reduce the amount getting through.
  • Thanks, Webbo.
  • Thank you!
  • Thank you. It's certainly less peppered!
  • The cunning plan seems to be working!
  • Ta me duck, Tam and Webbo.
  • They've been busy again...
  • Can’t the spammers already registered have their accounts removed?
  • We need troops. Weaponry. They have invaded our special place and we are angry.

They should be and on the first offence. Anyone whose first post is such obvious spam as we've been getting is never going to be a useful contributor to the site.

What steps are being taken to manually confirm all these new members are genuine, Webbo?

    17 spam now. :(
  • Nothing seems to be working. I do hope this isn't the end of TB...
  • 20 now.
  •  I hope it isn't the end of TB too.

They get rid of one lot and another lot takes their place within minutes.

Most of the first page is now spam posts.
  • Maybe we need to ask Webbo to take the forum offline today as it's getting to be a massive problem for everyone.

  • It's annoying, but not necessarily a problem. Obviously it needs solving, but we know the threads we want to keep up the top.
  • Or stop any new 'members' who have two names and a number from posting?
  • *checks*
    Oh. Yes, we're okay.
  • Something changed with the latest design update, as this happened before.

Baggy, the spam has gone over onto page 2 now and it's not going to stop at this rate.
