Query about use of possessives

I have a sentence which includes the following statement:

"which increased the plane and crew's survivability under fire"

Is this the correct way to handle the possessives, or should the statement be written this way:

"which increased the plane's and crew's survivability under fire"

  • It's a compound possessive so you only add it to the last one.

Thanks, I thought that was the case but thought I'd better check.
  • Blimey, I simply thought the first example sounded correct, I've never even heard of a compound possessive.
  • When in doubt, I simplify:

"which increased the survivability of plane and crew"
  • I thought the original sentence a bit clumsy and prefer Gerald's response.  Only other comment Gerald's sentence is passive and the first one isn't.  (I think)
  • Me neither Claudia ( it's way too technical for me)
