When I looked at this week's Friday Fictioneers photo prompt my heart sank. How to formulate something original from such a 'blah' photo? All I can say is: reader, I tried.
I agree about the photo. I sent Rochelle some of mine years ago, chosen for being different. She used one.
Ditto! I chose so carefully but she seems to have her favourites. I sent another one a few weeks ago of my bandaged foot and crutches as I thought it would be a good one to prompt different stories, but... nada.
Enjoyed reading your 100 word story this week, Lizy. Your ability to get so much into so few words continues to amaze. Good luck with publicising your books and with the new one you mentioned starting elsewhere.
Well done, Lizy. I couldn't write anything this week. Her relentlessness gets too much for me sometimes. The subject matter is important - of course it is - but I don't need it shoved down my throat week after week.
No, it isn't healthy. Sometimes I want to say to her: what about Cambodia, China, Rwanda, the Hutus... or are they not as important to remember because the numbers are fewer? What about other atrocities? What about slavery? Where do you draw the line?
I just wish she'd write straight fiction rather than 'Remember the Holocaust' stuff, but that would probably get me shot for being anti-Semitic. Which I'm not. I guess any kind of obsession worries me.
Fascinating insight into your researches, BB. One thought on Bert. Might it have been a name he was known by but not his registered name? I have a relative who was called Susan by her husband. Her name was actually Ellen but she had been in service where there was already an Ellen and was given the name Susan by her employer. She met her husband there and so he knew her as Susan and she was always called that throughout their long marriage.
Yes, that's exactly the problem: Bert, Albert, Cuthbert. And then the problem of being known by their other name – that's what I've found with many postcards and it's only when you check the birth/baptism records that you discover the real name. My own father was known as John but was really Arthur.
I did go through the passenger list for Bert, Albert and Cuthbert and still haven't found him yet. It means creating a tree for each one and looking for a Kent connection. And then of course his name might be Arthur.
My brother was known by his second name as his first name was the same as his father's. I've been Liz, Lizzie, Beth before I became Lizy on here. And the Spanish medics called me Mary, my middle name, for some obscure Spanish reason.
Just for fun I put Bert name alternatives into a search. The list suggested is quite long and that is assuming it wasn't just a nickname. Good luck, BB.

Like you, I have a name that can take on many forms. In Spain I am Susanna, la Inglesa de Jalon. (I keep telling them I'm now La Irlandesa, but hey-ho.) Officially I am addressed as Senora Anna; my middle name is Anne. Spanish naming conventions are different to ours. Spaniards don't have middle names and they take both their parents' surnames. So your medics thought your surname was Mary Young. It gets quite complicated, but basically they interpreted 'Mary' as your paternal surname, the one you would commonly use if you were Spanish. *insert cross-eyed emoji*
Blimey. I'm glad I don't need to research anyone from Spain.
It would be a nightmare, BB. A married couple and their child all have different surnames: - the husband's surname comprises his paternal and maternal surnames, eg 'Tomas Perez' - the wife doesn't take her husband's name, but keeps her paternal and maternal surnames, eg 'Santos Cruz' - the child takes the first surname (i.e. the grand-paternal) from each of his parents so his surname would be 'Tomas Santos' *insert two cross-eyed emojis*
I didn't plan to write anything for Friday Fictioneers this week because I haven't sorted out my new laptop. However, she picked my photo this week, so I had to participate, didn't I?
Thanks, Claudia. The research has been fascinating. I've shared the blog on Facebook with a boosted post in Quebec and have some anecdotes from people in the area affected.

Here's my 100 word story for this week, after failing to come up with one last week.

p.s. I managed to write something last week, and failed miserably to come up with an idea this week!
I am trying a bit of self-publicity via my blog - no idea if it will make an iota of difference.

I'll probably aim for one a month.

At least with the same surname throughout a family one has a better chance of knowing where one comes from!
