online writing communitieis

edited January 2015 in Writing
Anyone know what is the best writing community for posting work online and getting feedback + helping out with other writers, based in UK if possible. There are a lot of them out there - no idea which ones are of any use or not.

  • Oops - my keyboard seems to have a life of its own today.
  • I use Chapter Seventy-nine and find it useful.

As you say, there are a lot of different ones. I suggest signing up for a few and seeing which suits you best. You might want to check that whatever you post is only available to members, not the general public. If it's not a private site, anything you post for review can be considered as published by some markets and competitions which might limit your chances of placing it.
  • btw, you should be able to edit your title to remove the typo.
  • Over the years I have subscribed to quite a few, including Chapter79 as mentioned by Phots. Those I now use most often specialise in Japanese style short form poetry, but I've also been a member of a more general forum for a very long time called Splinter4all. This was set up when the much larger Writing4all.ie was having technical difficulties. They are a helpful bunch over there.

The site is here and it covers most areas of writing http://splinter4all.actifforum.com/login writing4allm

They are also on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Splinter4all?fref=ts

  • Which haiku ones do you use, Seaview? I used to belong to one, that split into two with almost identical names, and got all muddled up!

Hello and welcome, Robert, have you introduced yourself yet?

Robert originally joined in 2008...! Was it something we said, Robert? :-h
  • It seems Robert may have had trouble logging in - he emailed me about changing his password on the 7th, which is also when he last logged in here. I replied but no response yet. Hopefully we'll see him again soon

Easily done, Liz. I am a bit of a butterfly myself when it comes to writing sites/forums :)

I am mostly on The Haiku Foundation over at http://www.thehaikufoundation.org/forum_sm/index.php where I now feel I know several poets quite well (albeit virtually) and feel very at home.

I am also a member of AHA, Jane Reichold's forum based in the US, but don't post as much now as I have done in the past. http://forum.ahapoetry.com/ Must go back though as, because of the large number of members, you get very rapid, honest feedback on this site.
  • This writers' forum (which is world wide) has threads for posting work. I haven't used them myself - I'm more interested in the stuff on self-publishing.

  • Thanks, Seaview.
  • Hello again. Not sure how to edit title on this. Don't get much chance to get onto website as home life is a bit hectic. Wife is in hospital with post-natal psychosis, and busy looking after 2 young daughters, and juggling work, trying to keep up with washing etc. Been very hectic for the past 2-3 years with various illnesses etc in the family but still trying to get a bit of writing done. Hope to be a more regular visitor for long, as I intend to give up watching all TV for lent!
  • Robert, you are going through the mill, aren't you? You're chasing your own tail, doing all that you do. Write when you can, and when you feel that it's cathartic. So sorry to hear about your wife - but it's good that she has been diagnosed.
I think you deserve a TB hug.
  • You've got a lot to deal with, so don't let yourself get stressed over the writing- or lack of.

Glad your wife is getting treatment.
  • Oh, Robert, your poor wife, and poor you!

You probably need a bit of vegging out in front of the box to keep your sanity.

You sound incredibly capable, I do hope your life gets better soon, and things calm down a bit for you - and you can get back to having some space for writing.

  • Well, if you know there's a lot of them out there then you can try them to know where is more better in posting your work. But you can just have your own blog and just invite viewers to visit your blog and see your work.

You need to remember that doing that will make a piece published, and for many magazines and competitions that will rule them out, so it limits your re-use.
  • Welcome, Mark - would you like to introduce yourself on a thread so we can greet you? More people will see you that way.
  • Hello, Robert. So sorry to hear what life has been throwing at you. I'm amazed that you have time to write anything longer than a shopping list! Well done.

    Hello, Mark!
  • Hi Robert and Mark.
  • Sorry for you and your family's problems, Robert. Hope things improve soon.
  • Hi, Mark ... I think you're new?
  • Thanks for all your comments. Looking forward to some nice weather so I can sit out on my allotment and write in peace for an hour or two. Meanwhile, celebrating getting my first couple of hours done this morning. Had to get up at 6am so I could write in Mcdonalds before going to work though.
  • Well done for getting some writing done before a day at work.
  • Wherever you can find time to write is good.
  • Good luck with your writing Robert, hope it helps see you through the tough times.
