Self publishing

edited August 2016 in Writing
Which is the best book I can buy with clear, simple advice to help me self publish a book?

I have stuff on Kindle but I want a book, with pages I can mark, dinosaur that I am.

I should also point out that any font smaller than 12 point is a problem for me.

  • The font size in books will be the issue.
  • Have you got one of those magnifiers for pages, Lizy, that fits actually ON a page and magnifies the whole thing? My dad had one, but also used his jewellers magnifying eyeglass, which meant he could read.
  • I've sent you a link to some info but if you'd like my draft notes for my next talk I can email them to you. They cover the basics and I can help fill in any gaps.
  • Those page magnifiers are good. We bought an A4 size one for my mum-in-law when her sight was giving her problems.
  • Lizy, check this: http://www.troubador.co.uk/matador.asp and there is a self publishing PDF free on the site.

I might show a vested interest; I am very pleased with the company's client service and product. Might seem a tad expensive, but think value.

  • Writing Magazine seems to have been having some contact this year with one of the SP companies but can't remember which it was.
  • Thank you all, especially Baggy - I have printed off what you sent mt and it looks very clear.
I have a page magnifier which help but it awkward to use, so I gave up buying WM as I couldn't get through it before the next month's arrived! (ps - don't tell Webbo or I'll be drummed out of TB!)

Oh, the temptation: 'Sir! Sir! Lizy said...' Nah - wouldn't tell tales!
  • It's a good test for Webbo's attendance...
  • Now i won't be able to sleep!
  • Hi Lizzy,
I recently ran a course on self-publishing in both print and ebook formats for Writers Holiday at Fishguard. You can follow this link https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/654083 for a free copy of the notes, which I am developing. I also do a demonstration of how to create a print book using Lulu.com. All of this is free to do until you actually buy a copy of a print book. I will PM you with my email address so you can contact me and I can send you a copy of my Lulu.com notes.

    Good luck and happy publishing!

I have self-published three books so far (if you are interested, you can preview "All about your Computer" at http://goo.gl/S85xIq, "All about Hauptwerk" at http://goo.gl/ZQf7c7 and my biggest most expensive book "The Polychronicon - A 35 year Adventure" at http://goo.gl/kakeLr which is not on retail sale but does sell only from Lulu's site.)

I have found the process very straight forward. You are required to purchase a proof copy before it will go to retail, but that is a reasonable requirement, and is the only charge.

My book "All about Hauptwerk" is a best seller (but in a **very** niche market) and I am happy with it. BUT you will never ever get a pile of your books on the front table in Waterstones because there is no promotion (unless you pay for it).
    However, I recommend it!
