"those who" or "those that"?

edited September 2010 in - Writing Problems
I'm writing a sentence which includes this statement: "and those who do will have their work returned". Should I write "those who" or is "those that" correct instead?

  • if you're talking about people then it's definitely who ...that is for objects...well that's how i know it anyway
  • To me it always sounds wrong when "that" is used for people.
  • Those WHO
No doubt about that one in my mind
  • Absolutely. It is an Americanism to use 'those that', which is why the grammar check always puts a red squiggle under 'those who', because the grammar checker in Microsoft products is American and it differs from English grammar as much as the spelling does
  • Lolli - where did that communication come from? Should it be written upside down?
