Author page on Facebook

edited January 2012 in - Writing Tales
With help from several kind folk, I've now got myself an author page on Facebook. Am hoping to build up my likes, as someone told me that something magic happens when you reach a certain number (I've no idea what, or how many...). But I live in hope.

If you'd like to visit, I'm at

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rosalie-Warren-Author/137864232999132

And if you felt like liking, that would be fantastic. I'll happily return the favour.

And if anyone can explain the magic thing to me, that would be good, too.

This is mine :D
• Thanks, have liked yours too, and seem to have posted 2 near-identical comments...
• So - what help did you need? Have to do this myself, apparently. Feels a bit strange.
• Done, Rosalie!

The only magic number I know is that when you get to 25 you can register the user name so that the url is shorter -

http://www.facebook.com/Treespeaker

I made the mistake when I started of having a book page rather than an author page and registering the user name. When I tried to change it, I could make the name of the page 'Katie W Stewart Author' but I couldn't change the user name. So it's forever 'Treespeaker'. I suppose I could have started another page, but I couldn't see the point.
• Ok, I set one up and a mystified as to how I tell myself from myself. And how to install a like button on my profile. Sheer gobbledegook! Helps!
• Liz - if you call your page 'Liz Brownlee Poet' people will know it's your 'poet page' and not your 'you' page.

To invite people to like your new page, go to the page and look on the right top corner - you should be able to see a button saying 'invite friends' (there's five or six things like
'Use this page as Liz Brownlee Poet'. The one you want is at the bottom). It will show you all your friends and you can select the ones you want it to send invites to).

There's a whole load of stuff you can do if you're clever - but I'm not! :(
• Done! Interesting pages, everyone.
• Nena and Liz, have liked both your pages.
• Just done that, Rosalie and also did Nena and BR's.
• Aww, thank you. I am quite looking forward to putting stuff on it but may have been a little premature as the cover I have is not the final one! Guess I could put it up as an interim measure.

I did get that offer to tell friends, Nena, but it only gave me a few I'd recently interacted with, but I did send off to all of them and some have liked already. I'll try it all when my brain isn't sated with the loveliness of having my daughter here this morning.

This is the link to my bare page... if anyone else has the patience to like, I would be very happy, thank you!

• Nena where is yours? I've liked the others - i may have already done yours in the past but can't find it...

Anyone know how to add the 'like' box to your own page? The instructions made no sense to me...
• I am thinking of doing a page. Do you have to do it from your personal account and if so do people then get to see you're personal stuff? I was thinking of writing with a pseudonym too, how does that tie in with your personal account, do you have to use your real name?
• Liz, my link is on one of my posts earlier on this thread, but I'm pretty sure you 'liked' me only a few weeks or so ago.

I was trying to work out the link button thingy this morning. Got completely confused and gave up.

Blackfeather, your 'page' is totally separate from your personal page, so no one who likes your author page can see anything on your personal page.
• Can you just have an author page but not a personal page?
• How do you set up an author page?
• Carol, I can't remember what the choices were when I started the account, but even if you have to start with a personal page, you don't ever need to use it.

Kateyanne - Scroll down to the bottom of your home page and you'll find the 'create page' tag. Just follow the instructions from there. It's quite easy to get a simple page going.
• 'Liked' Rosalie. And I could even read the very first Captcha too, usually takes me about five refreshes.
• Done my page!

• And I 'liked' it!
• Thanks to everyone who has 'liked' mine. I've been away for the weekend - just back - and will try to catch up with everyone and return the likes very soon.

All the above 'liked'... I expect nothing in return... well, except...

;)

Ps. Think you'll have to cut 'n' paste mine (has an 's' after the 'http' - summat to do with security I think).
• Woo, I finally have enough likes to change the URL to something a bit more sensible :)

25 likes and you can have a custom URL
• edited January 2012
Have liked you, Col. And everyone else I hope (please let me know if I have somehow failed to 'like' anyone)

Am off to investigate this custom URL thing now...

Can't see how to do it, though. Can anyone tell me, please?
• I don't really understand facebook. I'm already on there - do I need an author page as well?
•
I don't really understand facebook. I'm already on there
ditto, but I'm lost, so ...... have given up :(
• Hey dora, anything you need to know, i can tell you. Well, not ANYTHING. not the secret to eternal life, health or wealth. But most things to do with Facebook. Just do it a bit at a time.
• Managed to like you Col before you change your name! The https seemed to work ok...
•
But most things to do with Facebook
How do I untell my mum I'm on there? Don't like her seeing my friends.
• There is a facility on every comment you make to stop anyone you want from seeing it. You can block your mum from any comment - easily. You CAN block her from almost everything.

Do you REALLY want to?
• I think I've liked everyone. Thanks for the original information, Rosalie. I hadn't realised you could have an author page, though I have a separate fb page for my author name, I very rarely go on it so this is much better. I've only just set it up so not much on it yet but I wouldn't mind a few likes.

• I've just 'liked' it Susie!
• Ok, off to do it! this is quite fun, seeing everyone in a new light!
• Think I've managed to 'like' everyone.
May attempt the author page in the near future.

Perhaps in the meantime you could all just tell me you like me on here to boost my momentum this morning !

(have already anticipated the comments on "boosting my momentum ! ;) )
• Lexia, we love you on here. However, it would be better for your writing if you weren't.
•
it would be better for your writing if you weren't.
no Liz!

Ooohhhhhhhhhhhh noooooooooooo Liz! !
My brain needs a good hour of TB to get it into the right mode for writing. It's all happening in mi 'ed ! ;)
• Well, this is sounding hopeful then.

I find I get into a sort of rota rut - TB, Facebook, dog forum... then think must start writing. Then I think - just see what going on, on the one I looked at first. Then do the other two. Then again. I HAVE NO CONTROL!!! HELP! Help me someone...
• I know what you mean, Liz... it can be an endless loop!

Have 'liked' your page, Susie.

Like you, Lexia :)

Right - I'm off to do some work :)

morning everyone

spent the day yesterday creating an author page on facebook, am quite pleased with it so far, apart from the fact that I've been forced to use the new timeline and I can't find anything and half the things don't seem to work right.

anyway, here is the link http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nel-Ashley-Author/105440296251114

if you wouldn't mind having a look and maybe liking it if you feel you can,. Any suggestions are welcome.

I've been through everyone's links above and liked them all

There is also a link to my blog on there (I was very busy yesterday lol) so feel free to check that out too.

thank you
• Hi Blackfeather - have liked your page and am following you on Twitter too.
• Don't forget us too! http://www.facebook.com/writingmagazine
I've been fiddling around with the new timeline but not very comfortable with it yet.
• Facebook is my next project...
• Thanks Rosalie, have reciprocated

I'm not liking the timeline much either webbo, have liked your link too though

does anyone know how you add tabs to the timeline version of your page. I can't find anywhere that tells you how to add ones of your own, just the ones for videos, notes etc that are fb's own tabs? I noticed some other authors have tabs with their own faqs and for goodreads etc
