No - they couldn't possibly keep track of what had actually been photocopied. There is a pot of money from people who have paid for photocopying licences etc that it is divvied up amongst the registered writers according to some mysterious formula based on what has potential for having been photocopied by virtue of having been published!
I agree Wordy - almost everyone is surprised by what they get in the first year. It is three years' worth, but even so. I didn't expect to get enough to cover the joining fee of £25 but it did that many times over. The following two years have been less than the first, but still in three figures, so if anyone who has eligible published items is still wondering whether to bother - please do!
