BBC period drama is going downmarket?

edited September 2009 in - Reading

  • Only time will tell.
  • Have to admit I won't miss the period dramas, can't stand them.
  • This sounds like good news to me. The BBC should be following HBO's model rather than trying to tweak its own and often outdated drama commissioning policy. There is a big world out there and a huge history to mine, yet we seem to see the same costume dramas appearing year after year in one form or another.

Maybe they should think about a reverse strategy too. They could have talented writers scripting original screenplays that could later be novelised and sold by BBC Books?
