First foray into fiction

edited October 2010 in - Writing Tales
I've had a short (very short) story accepted in a flash fiction anthology of zombie stories. This was the first piece of fiction I've written, so it's inspired me to work on some other Horror and SF ideas.

• congratulations, DB!
• Well done DB!
• Great news Dene! :D
• Congratulations!
• well done, lets hope it's the first of many for you :)
• Hey, well done, DB. This must mean you'll go on and write more... :)
• Well done, DB - now for the second rung!
• Congratulations. I'm undead glad to hear that.
• Phot's Moll, thanks. I think it's the dawn of something... :-)
• Whoo hoo! Well done DB! Which antho/publisher is it going to be in?
• It's an anthology by Static Movement called Unquiet Earth. Not sure when it'll be published as it's still open for submissions.
• Well done, DB.
• Excellent. A few of us are in Static Movement anthos so welcome to the club! We've got a thread going (think Lou Treleaven started it off). If http://www.writersnews.co.uk/writers_talkback/comments.php?DiscussionID=167622 doesn't work just search for Static.

Great stuff :)
• Great news.
Congrats, DB!
• That's really good. Well done, Dene!
• Well done DB
• Yes, DB, you're in good company. I am reading the third of the anthologies at the moment (which I am in, two of them along with Pixie) and they are a good read.
• dorothyd, do you specialise in horror?
• Yes and no. A lot of my acceptances have been SF based, some have horror overtones, then there are the outright horror ones. A variety. I have always written widely, the Christmas story I had accepted by Mobile Home Magazine was a love story set on a mobile home park. My articles range widely too, from housework to relationships, through religion and now spiritual subjects.

My books are historical, with just (at the moment) this one venture into a horror novel, which is new for me, but he (the author) tells me there are more to come. Good, I like it.
• Well done.
• Well done DB.

LilyC and LeeH are also specialist members of TB's horror team, Dene :P
• Well done DeneBebbo. The first of many.
• Well DeneBobbo ! Ooh - all these horror writers - scary :) At least Haloween is over !
• Just had another piece accepted for the Unquiet Earth anthology. Next fiction I'm going to try is a ghost story for a WM/WN competition.
• Wow - congratulations
• congratulations, DB!
• That's great, well done.
• Great news DB, can't wait for Unqiuet Earth to come out :)
Good luck with the ghost story.
• Congrats with the acceptances, DeneBebbo. You might want to check out Pill Hill Press also - there's a thread on here about them too.
They're taking submissions for their Daily Flash 2012 anthology at the moment - I've had mine accepted and it would be great if other tber's get in. (Several of us are in the 2011 flash anthology.)
• Wow! Well done!

Thanks, I'll check that one out.

Seems that there's still some way to go to fill Unquiet Earth, so I may work on a third submission that I've got an idea for.
• DB, while you're at it, I want stories for my Static Movement anthology, Dark Deeds In History ... history being any time up to the last century. Check it out and write me something! I have another anthology I want to do and I need to fill this one first!!!!!!

Sure, I will check it out and may try to write something.

After struggling for so long to be able to write fiction, I'm now starting to get the hang of it. But I'm sure my early stories will look woeful once I've got a year or two experience behind me!
• tis OK, I am prepared to do edits, if necessary, not looking for total perfection! It would be nice but doesn't often happen ... (LOL)

Now got three zombies stories accepted in this anthology.
• good one, DB!
• Well done DB!
•
good one, DB!
Thanks. And don't forget, the customer is always rot :-)
• do I ever like that title! I mean ... they don't come much better than that for a Zombie antho!
• Wow, I've just had a story accepted for the SM anthology My Evil Twin. That's a 100% success rate so far with my fiction, but I wonder whether SM editors reject many submissions. Still, it's motivated me to continue with fiction - next attempt will be for the online mag Strange Horizons.
• There are rejections, DB! I have sent some stories back as not being right for the anthology they submitted it to, or simply not right generally, but on the whole the editors take what comes if it is reasonably well written and has a good storyline. Well, I do, and judging by the stories I've read, others feel the same.

It's in many ways a boost for the aspiring fiction writers, being accepted means they go on to do more, as you are.
Congratulations!
I am about to launch eight new anthologies for SM, look out for them and see if you are inspired!

Indeed. It would have been embarrassing if my story was rejected for this anthology as I suggested the anthology in the first place!

Blimey, that's a lot of new anthologies. I'll keep checking out the SM site to watch out for them.

Btw, do you know how long it is typically for a SM anthology to be published from the date it's open for submissions?

no, varies tremendously. My Dark Deeds In History is filling up, the others are very empty. If it is 'open until filled' it can take any length of time.

re:acceptances: just accepted two stories, both really good, the standard is pretty high most of the time.

This anthology is now out. Can't wait to get a copy and see my first fiction in print, and looking forward to reading all the other stories.
• that one filled up fast, along with Weird City 1, which I have already. I am in Weird City 2 and most of the others. Trying to finish this current story for Beyond the Grave, my second if it is accepted. Then there is the Antarctica story to complete and then back to the WIP.
That zombie one looks really good, DB, wish I had tons of money, I have to put that on the back burner for the moment, having bought Weird City, Adventures In Other Worlds, Oil, Shadows Within Shadows ... all in the last week! I need to sit for a whole evening and work out the ISBN and things to get Amazon to put them on my author page.

At least you have plenty to read for now.
• but not yet, I am lost in the Dark Tower series! Can't come out of it until I get to the end (for the second time)...
• Wish I could afford a copy, DB! I'm in this one as well :)
