Magenta Shaman - now on Kindle!

edited May 2011 in Writing
The first episode in my short story series, Magenta Shaman is now available to download to Kindle.

http://amzn.to/jcMd0L

It's an urban fantasy of just 7,000 words, and is the first of many, yet is complete in itself.

Please enjoy it, review it and let me know how you feel about Magenta herself.

The original cover artwork is by my husband Laurence Ranger, and has been adapted by me. We both hope you like it.

I must give my thanks to various members of Talkback for providing their research and voicing their experience in publishing to Kindle, particularly Midia, Sofyia, Carol, Jay, kateyanne and Mutley. Additionally I'm extremely grateful to Tony Cowin and Lee Hughes for such valuable and honest critiques, even though this is Urban Fantasy - outside of each of our usual horror genres.

My special thanks go to my husband Laurence for believing in Magenta and offering his own extensive esoteric knowledge and sublime artwork - Magenta is a part of both of us.

The following is the Amazon Product Description for Magenta Shaman:

A natural shaman by birth, Magenta Sweeney travels through trance-induced realms to deliver souls from demonic threat.

But Magenta also has an earthly life in modern-day Brighton, a strange and cosmopolitan city caught between the rolling hills of England and the Sussex coast where she lives with husband Tom.

Every journey Magenta takes is unique. Her intricate knowledge of herbs and poisons guides her when to heal - and when to kill. Yet before she faces each challenge she must meet with ancient and terrifying entities that will unlock her passage into other dimensions, but not without question - or sacrifice.

This first episode in the Magenta Shaman short story series finds Magenta’s relationship with Tom at breaking point as she takes greater risks to help those waiting for her. Under pressure from The Protegians, a mysterious group of earth-bound guardians, the shaman is sent on increasingly dangerous missions by their intermediary - a suave, arrogant man known only as The Judge.

Will Magenta survive the fight to expel a deadly demon from a foetid, volcanic pit? And will Tom stand idly by when he finds his wife's body, broken and lifeless on their bed?

Hope you don't mind Lily but I uploaded the cover onto the Amazon site the other night. So great it needs to be seen on the book page.

Great story and so well written. I'll post a review up on Amazon either tonight or tomorrow. Good luck with the book and the rest of the series Lily.

I don't mind at all Tony, but I'm not sure why it isn't on the book page - it was included in the book AND uploaded as a separate file. They've put it on the details page but not at http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=magenta+shaman&x=0&y=0 I was going to email them about that today.

5 sold already, and some fun rankings including 44 in the top 100 Books > Fantasy > Horror category in between Stephen King's The Dark Tower VII and China Mi
• Brilliant, some great company to keep.

Fabulous news, Lilly! Believe me you will soon become addicted to checking your Amazon ratings every day:) I will review it tomorrow. Well done!

Well done LilyC, it's great to see TB's making a success with their work.
• Congratulations Lily.
• Way to go Lily, 'bout time Magenta went public!!
• Very exciting - let us know how you get on, won't you? This is new, but exciting, ground!
• Wow, thanks everyone for your support.

Another two sales today. At this rate I'll be able to afford an extra large mochahottychochychino from Costa! (Am holding out for a bun to go with it.)
• Very best of luck, Lily - and well done already on the sales. When I get my Kindle (soon), I'll be reading it.
• Aw thanks Rosalie. I really must get a Kindle too!
• Good luck. I'm off to take a look.
• Read, rated and review is now up. Thanks Lily great read indeed.
• Thank you Tony! What a wonderful review, not to mention skilfully written. ;)

I appreciate it SO much.

Anybody else want to review Magenta Shaman? Nervously bites fingernails...
• No problem Lily I wrote what I meant. I put it on the American site too as there were no reviews on there and that's where my main account was originally so I could post it twice.
• You're a honey, honey :) Thank you again.
• Mine is downloaded and ready to go. I must say I am enjoying the books by TBers much more than the ones I was supposed to be reading at the moment!
• Mutley - you're a star. Thank you. Yours is on my download list (it's mounting up!) I'm looking forward to getting it as soon as I can.

That's eight now. When I hit double figures, I get that bun!
• Just downloading a kindle for PC reader now so I can purchase my copy :D

Looking forward to it, Lily!

• User error - had a little help; thank you...

• Just bought my copy, Lily! Will write a review when I finish it :)
• Thanks b_R; so it was you! (Not that I've been checking my sales figures every five minutes. Oh no).
Seriously - cheers. I hope you like it, even without the horror. (It is a bit nasty :) )
• Was I your millionth buyer then, Lily?
• If you take of the 'millio' and replace it with 'ni' then you're about there. :)
• Hurray! Here's to double figures been just around the corner!!
• Just posted my review for you, Lily. Just checked and yes, it's on both UK and .com.
xxx
• Midia, you've made my heart tremble. Thank you so much for a lovely review.

• Hurrah - double figures!

My friend in Australia bought one. She said they have to use Amazon.com as .co.uk won't give the price.
• Well done, Dorothy!!
• Dorothy?
• welll done Lily!
•
Dorothy?
HA! That's what comes of catching up with a million posts all about the same thing.

Apologies, Lily my brain is a little frazzled today. I've got deadlines coming out of my ears and I'm getting caught up with TB too much!!
• No problem b_r - thought you were getting your own back for me calling you Stephen. :)

Go - you have deadlines!!!
• Ha! Someone bought Magenta Shaman - then got a refund! I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

I assume it wasn't what they hoped for - or maybe they just thought it was rubbish. But for £2.08? I don't think I'd bother with the hassle.
• It wasn't me - off to finish my copy in a minute.
• Tee hee, Mutley. Actually, not long afterwards there was a purchase through Amazon.com (the refund was on .co.uk) so it could be someone worked out they'd get it slightly cheaper in the US and swapped.

I'm wondering whether I should say in my description that it contains swearing. It's not YA, after all and is tagged as dark urban fantasy so... nah.
• I didn't know you can get refunds.
Anyway where did you see all that info?
• Me neither!

When you log into your bookshelf at https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing there's a Report tab. Under that you get Months to Date Unit Sales, you then get three options Kindle Sales US, Kindle Sales UK and Kindle Sales DE. Click on any of those to see you Sales figures. It gives you the Title, ASIN, Units Sold, Units Refunded and Net Units Sold. It seems to be updated every half-hour or so.

If you published via Smashwords I'm not sure how this would work.

Thanks for the info.
Smashwords is better in a way as they send an email when you have sold a copy. They also have an accounts page.
• I hope to explore Smashwords soon. I like the idea of receiving an email per sale.
• Imagine opening your email box one day to see it jam packed with emails!
(And not the ones about Viagra.)
• I can dream... :) We can all dream.
• I dream of that too.
• Keep dreaming and one day it'll come true!
• The review I was chewing my fingernails over because she has never read my work before is now up at both Rayven's review site at Darkiss Reads.com and Amazom.com - and she's given Magenta Shaman 5 stars! What a relief.

http://www.darkissreads.com/2011/05/magenta-shaman-by-lily-childs.html

And I've sold another one! It's slow but sure.
• Best of luck with it, Lil.
