Chris Evans' 500 Word competition - winner announced

edited June 2011 in - Writing Tales
There were nearly 30,000 entries for Chris Evans' 500 Words writing competition for children - the winner was announced this morning during a live Radio 2 broadcast of Chris Evans' show from the Hay Festival. Isn't it fantastic to see so many young writers getting involved? The winner's story, and all fifty that were shortlisted, are on here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/chris-evans/500-words/
Which is your favourite?

  • It was a wonderful competition and the two winning stories were truly worthy. How great to have them read out by celebrities too!
  • That's really an encouraging sign.
I'll be reading later when I have more time to do them justice.
  • I'm bookmarking this to read later.
  • Thirty thousand?

And they're all children? Brilliant. :)

I guess this was only advertised on his show, was it? Only I don't listen to Radio 2 very often.
  • Blue Peter too, I think.
  • Oh we don't watch that much, although I saw (is it Helen) Helen's tight rope walk, now THAT was something else.
  • Call me 'nasty- minded,' but I am not convinced the 9 years old winner did not have some adult help. Some of the words and phraseology had me doubting. I make this comment with several years experience of doing workshops in schools for this age group, among others.
  • Where are the two winning stories I can only see a link for all 50?

You can read the two winners there - can't see them on Chris Evans's link.

Hmm, not sure my nine-year-old son would say "She cursed herself," and he is quite a bright lad.

On the whole though, it's a creepy. I like the idea. Think I might ask him later what he thinks of it.
  • The children were very articulate when being interviewed later - I give them credit for their stories.

    Hope I haven't been fooled. :(
  • My son is very articulate, as is his thirteen year old bro. Still don't reckon he's say "cursed" though :) even though he knows what it means.
  • They both rang true for me. Very well done. I hope the older children's category isn't from a true experience - I found it very moving.
  • I emailed the Chris Evans show re the website not showing the winners and have had a reply - they are now clearly indicated.
