How exposure only led to a paid feature
A while back I had two travel articles published at www.hackwriters.com. This is an exposure only site to allow writers to get their work seen by a wider audience. A few days ago I was contacted by someone setting up an online travel magazine. The editor had read my articles at HW and invited me to submit a piece to him, which if accepted would receive a nominal payment. I sent along a piece that had been rejected by another online travel mag, and this time it was accepted.
While the debate about unpaid v paid work continues, with non-fiction it would seem that some unpaid work online can lead to further opportunities - with minimal effort if you have a piece lying around waiting to submit elsewhere.

Although I do feel strongly against writing for nothing, there are always exceptions to the rule and reasons why we sometimes have to break it. Dene's example proves why it sometimes works.
