Books for a six year old?

edited November 2013 in - Reading
My nephew will be six in a couple of weeks and would like books for his birthday - so he shall have them. Can I have suggestions, please (preferably with Amazon links)

• When they were little my girls used to like The Little Red Train stories - lots of pictures and fun text with repeated phrases.

I've just found this gift collection: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Little-Train-Gift-Collection/dp/0091798930/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_8

If you're looking for something with fewer pictures, Horrid Henry (by Francesca Simon) books are quite a simple, but popular read, though he is very naughty in them! There are dozens of titles.
Here's one!

Roald Dahl, too. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Slipcase-Fantastic-Chocolate-Marvellous-Medicine/dp/0140926526/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1385744478&sr=1-1&keywords=roald+dahl

Is he going to read them himself or have them read to him?
• He's quite young... the Francesca Simon's Horrid Henry's would probably suit.

If he has a taste for something a bit older, one of the best books Jem enjoyed was 'Aquila' by Andrew Norris.

The Grunts, by Philip Ardagh, has just had a very good Telegraph? review. Great for boys.
•
Is he going to read them himself or have them read to him?
Although I'm sure family members might be persuaded to read to him, I'd like something that he'd be interested in looking at himself too, so I need them to either be simple or have good pictures.
• Captain Underpants then. It's done like a cartoon, is seriously funny, and the writing is sparse in speech bubbles, but the stories aren't too simple.
• Ah, I remember us looking at Horrid Henry before and thinking they were good but too old for him - he's probably the right age now.

I know some TBers write for children, but I think he might be too young for most of them.
• Funny is good. His mum has no interest in books, but if they're funny she might help him read them from more than a sense of maternal duty.
• For stories he can have read to him now and then read himself in a while try the Dick King Smith books. The Sheep Pig (made into the film Babe) is good to read aloud but he wrote quite a lot of shorter books and you may be able to find a boxed set. I know we got one for our Grandson last year.
• Jem loved Captain Underpants. Press on the book in the picture...

• HAve you thought of going to the library and asking what books are taken out most often?
• I hadn't thought of that, Lizy. Good idea.
• My grandsons used to like "The Tiger Who Came to Tea" by Judith Kerr
• And The Gruffalo - Julia Donaldson is very popular.
• We've given him Gruffalo stuff before - he did like it apparently.
