Female Measurements (Vital Statistics)

edited January 2009 in - Writing Problems
Hello everyone,

I am conducting research for a piece of writing that centres around 2 characters. The research has so far entailed finding out as much as I can regarding female measurements, or vital statistics as they are otherwise known. I wouldn't normally concern myself with this line of research, but for this story in particular it is important.

The first character is Bryanie, 24 years old
Her measurements are 32C-27-34
She is 5ft 5
Weighs around 115ibs
Dress size 10

The second character is Stephanie, 41 years old
Her measurements are 34DD-30-35
She is 5ft 8
Weighs in the region of 130ibs
Dress size 12

The information above is how I imagine the characters to appear, but whether the measurements are in proportion to the characters height, weight and dress size I am not sure.

Bryanie I think may be underweight slightly, and perhaps a similar problem with Stephanie. I'm finding it a difficult task trying to envisage these characters by studying the statistics alone. I do have a strong idea of how Stephanie looks, as she is the lead protagonist. I imagine her to have a strong physique, not excessive, with a full figure but not overweight.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Consider describing how you see them without worrying about actual measurements.
Women of the same height and dress size can vary- very prominent bones in arms and legs, and collar bone could indicate someone is moving toward anorexia, but it could also be they are just plain thin, eats like a horse and not put on weight! Or they have a more solid bone structure.
  • AARGh -having to convert lbs to stones and lbs!!!! Measurements and dress sizes about right for each other. 130 lbs is only 9st 4lb, so stef would be quite skinny for her height, (I am 5ft 2 ins and i look 'right' at 9½stone (133lbs)) I think Steph would need to be about 10½stone (147lbs)

Bryanie would be about 8st 3lbs, a bit skinny I would have thought, make her about ½stone (7lbs) heavier

    Some vital statistics for you.

I don't think she would be skinny - I'm 5 foot 8 and I'm often around 9 and a half to 3 quarters of a stone, which is slim... I'd think she'd be too fat at 10 and a half stone...

Just measured as I am a 12, well 12s are a bit big trouser wise but a 10 is too small, - I'm a 34 B (and I have a slim back) 26 and a half waist, and 37. Definitely not skinny if that's what you want, just slim.
  • I'm 5'7" and wear either size 10 or 12 - depending of where I shop. Most
of my clothes are a 10, but some shops are too tight across the shoulders.
    32B...

Haven't weighed myself for 10 years.
  • But you have measured the length of 'not weighing'!
  • Don't have the necessary equipment, so to speak!

I think it's a good idea actually. (NOT to I mean!!) OH weighs himself all the time, i know because he never QUITE gets the scales back under the bath properly... I'm pretty sure it's not son...
  • I usually weigh myself when we visit my mother-in-law- as she has scales. Otherwise when I get my annual check ups at hospital.
For my 5 ft 7in height I should be about 10 and a half stone I believe for a correct weight. I can safely say I am well over this. Size 8 feet.
Many younger women do have larger feet. Size 7 and 8 are always the sizes with the least shoes left in sales, and when new styles come in they are the first to go. If you have smaller feet and are a size 10 or 12 you can get whatever you want in clothing or footwear at any time.
    (Sorry, rant over) :)
  • I think it's how you view things... shoes I mean... isn't 5-6 the average woman's foot size? That's what I am and can never get anything in the sales...

Clothing I admit is easy, except that my waist is too small for my hips, so the waist on everything tends to be way too big.

Have you ever tried T K Maxx Carol? Designers often do bigger sizes cut beautifully, and I often curse when I see something really nice in there which is too big for me. If you can get used to going along the rails, they are much better set out than they used to be, you can get brilliant bargains. People are aLWAYs asking me where I get my clothes, and seem extremely disappointed to find the things they admire most are from TK MAxx!!
  • The problem Liz, is that most designers don't do size 20/22!
And they have created designs that look great on a twenty year old but not on a fifty year old.
I've just bought a few things from our new Ann Harvey shop, but they were reduced, as the full price I could not justify buying. (My hubby doesn't put restrictions on me, but my personal conscience wouldn't justify it.)

Thank you to everyone for your advice.

Thanks for that. I don't envisage either character as being too skinny, and half suspected their respective weights would be understated.

I see Bryanie as a size 10, slim, a healthy glow about her, and well proportioned. She eats well, is showing no signs of being underweight.

Stephanie as a size 12, a broader figure than Bryanie but reasonably toned. She would wear a dress very well as her body shape is curvaceous. Would a hip measurement of 35 be too little to show this? Again, she is well proportioned, a strong posture and a good height at 5ft 8. She is also physically in good shape.

I'm just not convinced that either set of measurements show this as being the case. As I said, I wouldn't normally concern myself with statistics of this nature. But the relationship between these characters requires the measurements of Bryanie in particular to be known. Stephanie's measurements are not as important, however as a comparison I thought it would be a good idea to distinguish them both in this manner.
  • Carol, don't worry about dress sizes, my mum has the same problem, and she's the same age! ;)
  • :D
So glad It's not just me being too fussy.
Mind you Neph has been shopping with me, so I probably choose clothes that echo my historical preferences...
  • historical preferences... do you mean you like wearing corsets and neck ruffs and... bodices?
  • I have a lovely grey blouse which has almost a jabot at the front with lace edging. I really would love a corset made for me, but they are horrendously expensive. I also go for long length skirts and in the summer the long length summer dresses.
In the winter and early spring you will not see me outside without a wrap/shawl of some sort. :)
  • I have the 'waist too big for me' problem too. Most of my skirts have the waist taken in by me so they fit better. I wear long, ankle length mostly or at least long calf length and I take 4 1/2 shoes in a Van Dal, 5 in everyone else's. I buy Van Dals on ebay at crazy prices, can't afford the shop ones. I don't know any woman who takes a 7 or 8. My daughter takes 5 and my best friend, taller and bigger than me, can get away with a size 4 sometimes.
Carol, a quick look on ebay for a waistcoat might solve your corset problem, I have several, including a tight black one which has just 2 buttons at the bottom, which leaves all of a ruffled blouse on show. Works well. Only cost me £5.
  • Well I'm a size 14 with size 6 feet.
  • does shoe size match dress size, then, I wonder, I am a 10-12 depending on the make.
  • I dunno.

the shoes I normally get are for school and are trainers.
  • I was wearing size 6 at 12 years old!
  • My mum's a 6 but now she's a seven after what happened to her foot.
  • I have one foot which is just over a size 5 and the other
just over 5.5 - so I have to buy size 6 and use insoles.

To make matters worse, my feet very narrow for their length.

Mine are very wide for my size.
  • Me too. Both my children got my feet -John Lewis had a Startright foot specialist in who said they have low, narrow ankles, wide fronts, high insteps and their feet bend in the wrong place for the way shoes are made, so we always had to buy a half size bigger. We never spent under 3 hours in the children's shoe department, and sometimes they'd have to order some as they wouldn't fir the kids with shoes if they couldn't find some perfect... thank goodness those days are done...
  • Five foot eight and weight just under 9.1/2 stone is fine for a woman. Not too skinny.
  • Wide and large feet=shopping nightmare.
  • Not really. Please look at the GA thread, you don't have to but...
