Great Idea but don't know where to start

  • Firstly - hi everyone.  This is my first time on the writer's news talkback.  I have what I think is a great idea for a lads mag article/feature.  The problem is, I don't know where to start.  Should I write it first and then approach magazines, or should I just have the material I will need (useful facts, contacts etc) and then contact the magazines.  The other thing is, non-fiction isn't really my thing.  I've only ever had specialist articles published, a long time ago.
I'd be grateful if anyone has any advice.
    Thanks
  • Hi Curly - nice to meet you.  If you subscribe to Writing Magazine have a look at the March 2006 issue.  Page 19 - Gordon Wells answers your query perfectly in a piece on writing and selling non-fiction.
  • Hi, Curly. Welcome to Talkback. Are you familiar with the type of articles the magazines publish?
  • I've been reading GQ, FHM, Maxim & Loaded - I think that's the kind of publication I would aim it at.  I do subscribe to Writing Magazine - have done for about 10 years, and I don't know what I'd do without it.  I'll look up the March edition and have a look.  I'm at the very start really - it's just the germ of an idea.  although I have the knowledge and books for the facts, I haven't even brainstormed, or written anything down!  Thanks!
  • Hello Curly! Welcome to Talkback!
  • Hi Curly!
  • Hello, Curly, welcome to the madhouse that is Talkback.
  • Wow - I never knew I had so many writing friends waiting to meet me!  I've decided to focus my efforts more on writing, and therefore giving up things that are not related.  This is one of the things to help - speak to like minded people all the time!  I'm off to read some of the other areas.
  • Hello Curly.
  • Hi Curly, good luck!
