Use of provincial words in competition entries

edited May 2008 in - Writing Problems
I have just looked up a word I want to use in a poem for a competition to ensure I am using it exactly, only to find it is a provincial word. I had never realised this. My question is, shoudl I put a footnote to the poem to ensure the judge knows the meaning, together with the dictionary reference? It has a more common meaning which would not make sense where I want to use it and I think it could be confusing.

  • This isn't my field Mutley but if it were me I would put the footnote though not necessarily the dictionary reference (some people prefer one dictionary over another and you don't want to prejudice your entry by favouring a particular one) - but as I say, not my field, just my intuitive response.
  • I agree with Celtic C - a footnote would be useful.
