Tempting title needed...

I'm writing a new monthly column for a local magazine about starting a new life here.
The column itself is taking shape, but I'm in need of a tempting title.
My brain's refusing to come up with anything other than the feeble.. Aberdeen Adventures, Hello Aberdeen! and A New Life in Aberdeen.
Each month's piece will have a sub-title, relating to that month's content but I'm looking for a regular name for the column itself.
Am I making any sense? Do I need to lie down in a darkened room??!
Please, can anyone sprinkle some inspiration my way?

Great opportunity tWR. Well done on getting the slot.
My brain is refusing to cooperate, but I'm sure everyone else will have a long list for you. :)
  • Thanks Carol, that means a lot.
It's actually seven years to the day since I last worked full time as a journalist/writer.
Had to stop work because of illness and it's been a long road back.
This is initially a voluntary gig, but is very likely to lead to paid work...if I get it right!
Feels huge to me and I'm very happy about it.

    {Incidentally for anyone starting out, I'm pretty evangelical about volunteering. I got my first break in journalism after volunteering my services to a local newspaper.}

That's really good news getting back to this type of work after such a long break, and I hope it does lead to further things.
Writers never stop writing, they just go and mull things over for a while.
  • If you post this issue's copy we'd have something to generate a title from?
  • Are you Scottish? Are you writing from the pov of an outsider observing Scottish/Aberdonian way of things? What sort of flavour - serious/amusing/??? -?
    Give us a clue...
  • Northern Exposure? (Unless you moved down there from Orkney, of course!)
  • Sorry :-)
I'm writing from an outsider's point of view.
We moved 500 miles from the West Country.
I'm from Lancashire but have lived all over the place.
Generally, I'm writing about my impressions of the city and how I'm going about making a life here ( I don't go out to work and don't have children so don't perhaps meet people in the most usual ways - workplace, school runs ).
They are lots of incomers here, many attracted by the oil/gas industry.
A mixed flavour, but light on the whole!
  • I believe XENON - a rare gas - is/was Greek for STRANGER...
might give you something to think about/ideas...
  • McXenon? :-)
  • What about something like Scots Wha' Hae (throw rotten tomatoes if you wish!) Does Aberdeen have any famous authors. I know Stuart MacBride is from Aberdeen, but I don't think 'Cold Granite' would be appreciated!
  • Could you use a phrase from the local dialect - assuming there is one!
  • North Sea Toil?
    Out of the pipeline?
  • An Alien in Aberdeen?
  • How about something biblical: "I was a stranger and ye took me in"

It's a bit long though and could be misconstrued!!
  • Around the Corner
  • Fit Like? Fitting In....
  • Fit like what, CC?
  • "Fit like?" - Aberdonian greeting equivalent to "How are you?"
  • Settling In
    Settling in the City
    A Stranger in Town
    A Traveller Takes Root
    Putting Down Roots
    Finding My Way
    New Town Tales
    First Foot Forward
  • A long way up ...

    See yoo!

    Aberdeen Dreamin'

Yer tiz! (Introducing local west country terms to the frozen north)
  • Something like:

    Aberdeen Diaries
    Aberdeen Dreams

    Or

The Lancashire Lass and her Weekly Gas. (gas meaning talking and chatting).
  • Depending on the tone/sentiment of the column you could go for something like Aberdeen Anguish or Aberdeen Angles.
But as it's a local publication, the Aberdeen bit is probably redundant.
    How about 'Sassenach Stories'?
  • City Sidewalks

    Onlooker

    Bird's Eye View (if you're a female)

A month in the life of a stranger
    Aberdeen everywhere
    Full House
    Fish out of water

I see what you mean. This is really hard, TWR.
  • From Hotpot to Haggis?
  • TBers are brilliant!
    Some great suggestions.
    THANKS!
In tearing hurry at the mo - busy day - will be back to say more later.
  • Perfect Strangers
  • Did anyone suggest "North Sea Gas"?
  • You could just call it PIPELINE
  • or GRAPEVINE
  • wow! what a lot of suggestions! Congratulations on getting the work, BTW!
  • Catch of the day/week
    Fish out of water
    In at the deep end
    Home thoughts from a broad
  • Have any of these inspired you?
  • Probably way too late and I certainly have different influences than most here.

"Brrr it's cold up here." Is the smallest word different from the Cheerleader's chant in the film 'Bring it On' . The stolen chant is the basis of the film. On my google tool bar the full text comes up after 'Brr it' - so it must be popular. For me, if I went to Aberdeen, that statement would almost certainly be my first impression.
  • Highland By-Lines.

    Outsider Viewpoints

    Integral Moments

Some ideas from an outsider, hope some of the TB collective ideas are useful to you
  • Anything with chocolate in the title would be tempting to me, but I would be interested to know what you chose!

    (Mars bars in batter?)
  • Well done TWR. Let us know what you decid. :-)
  • It must be short and pithy, TWR. Anything cumbersome, like 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night', would never be accepted.
