Submitting articles to The Lady magazine

edited October 2008 in - Writing Problems
Has anyone submitted articles to The Lady? Their writers guidelines state that articles can be submitted on floppy disk and photographs as colour transparencies. I've emailed to ask if this only means 3.5" floppies, and whether they accept digital images, but have had no response. It seems surprising that a magazine would not accept digital images these days.

  • can't help but welcome to TB anyway.
  • There is a thread on here somewhere that covered this issue. I'm certain they accepted digital images.
    Welcome to Talkback.
  • Welcome to TB DeneBebbo =)

Found the thread titled - Articles on spec - 'The Lady' so just put that in the search box. It will bring up a list on the left hand side under the search box. The thread was started September 2006.
But you can always e-mail for clarification of those things you are uncertain of. :)
  • Hi, DeneBebbo. Welcome to Talkback. Why not introduce yourself on a new discussion under the Welcome Writers category? What genre do you like reading and writing? Why not enter October's One Word Challenge? If you're confused, just shout!
  • I tried The Lady just once and followed their then guidelines re pics which was to enclose on a CD with a written article on paper. They didn't want anything emailed, and that was only about 2 years ago.
  • I have not sent articles to The Lady but have had several Viewpoint features used. I have always sent paper copies. I was once asked to shorten a piece and then email the piece again but they seem to only respond to written approaches. As for pictures, it is interesting to know they accept images on CD, Viv. The guidelines they sent me only allowed for coloured transparencies and black and white prints but that was a couple of years ago now. There are still magazines that do not accept even high quality digital images. This England and Evergreen come to mind.
  • Wordy, This England and Evergreen do accept digital images - it's stated on their writer's guidelines. I recently had an article published in Evergreen and I submitted photos as JPEGs on a CD.
  • So they've finally moved into the digital age.
  • Many thanks for that information, DeneBebbo. Just shows one of the great benefits of this site, the sharing of information. It wasn't that long ago I sent a query and was told they were not accepting digital images so maybe I will give them another shot now. Good to know that the digital age is gradually filtering through.
  • Curious that The Lady accept digital images on a CD but don't mention that in the writer's guidelines.
  • Received the Contributor Guidelines from This England/Evergreen today and they are much more flexible regarding photographs than in the past when I have queried with them. I used the contact us form on the website to send for details. Probably the biggest snag here is the time element with the magazines being quarterly. Really need to think ahead for anything seasonal or based on an anniversary.
  • I submitted a viewpoint article a few years ago on the problems of child protection and the snags faced by parents who want to photograph their children performing in school plays but they are not allowed or advised against it for fear of being labelled paeophiles. My Uncle Raymond wrote for the Lady under the pseudonym C. Clapham. He specialised in horticulture and gardening. He was my mother's brother so you can see it runs in the blood as one might say. That is a good title for a crime story. There you are if I don't beat you to it.
