Used to visit that thatched cottage on the postcard as a child when it was a tea rooms. I’m sure I have a postcard of it from that time but can’t lay my hands on it at present. Think it may be a restaurant now but haven’t been to Ringwood for ten years or so. The building beyond is Monmouth House. The Duke of Monmouth was held prisoner there on his way to his execution in London following the Battle of Sedgemoor. The scene hasn’t changed much although the ring road nearby means this is a dead end if I remember correctly.
Someone who lives near there was telling me a little about it. I haven't been for decades. Hopefully those at my talk later in the year will enjoy seeing the view.
Love these glimpses into family stories, Baggy. I think having lodgers was quite common. Certainly in all the searches I have done into our families they have often been lodgers or have had people lodging with them at some stage in their lives. Single people moving away to work needed somewhere to live and often the occupation of the lodger is related to local work opportunities.
Thanks Baggy. Looking at the Blogger website, it also appears in the last few weeks THEY have tweaked something that makes it impossible for me to reply to comments except as 'Anonymous'. There are quite a lot of complaints so hopefully Blogger will sort it out.
I thought it was my computer yesterday when I couldn’t get the link to work, .Lizy. Obviously the young man’s time apparently dreaming life away was simply resting his eyes whilst he thought things through!
Comments are still moderated, but as far as I remember I did change the comment options so that people without Google or OpenID accounts can leave comments.
Hopefully I'll be able to get into the habit of using my blog more often, but not until after I get back from my week away.
I don't spend long on these - they're mainly cards bought for the first slide in talks, chosen for the image. Even though they won't make it into a book, I usually try to buy cards I can research.
