Because if I see a card I like, I buy it. But as I have all the cards for my next two books I sell others on. I add the brief family history to the ebay description and some are sold because of that. Usually these cards are at markets and I only pay a few pennies for them. That particular card sold within a few hours. Obviously that was just luck but I sold it for enough to pay for the car park when I met a friend for lunch (the market was next door).
My ability to reply to comments on my blog has been limited to one or two each time and then it shuts down on me. I'm wondering whether Blogspot has changed in the few months I wasn't using it. Anyone else having the same problem?
Apparently the local businesses have funded it, but with the amount of money our council has wasted/lost, it wouldn't have been a surprise if they had.
Loved your coincidence story,BB. Had one of those myself recently. My parents married during WWII and always mentioned the freezing rain that they encountered on their wedding day. Apart from getting this extreme weather confirmed by the Met Office a few years ago I had found no references to the freak conditions. My son lent me a book he found in a charity shop on the role of railways during the war and there was a reference to all the problems the railways had on that day with some personal stories from those who experienced it.
Yet again, truth is stranger than fiction. Really sympathise, Lizy, but probably Australian records would be harder to access for verification. Hope it all sorts out in the end.
Now I have got used to my new computer and I finally have access to my images I decided to start using my blog again. If nothing else, it helps me exercise the writing muscle which has been in danger of seizing up of late. http://www.adbwilliams.co.uk/blog/
I attended a talk last week by a local woman who has researched all the names on our War Memorial. She didn't tell us about them all - there wouldn't have been time - but it's good toknow that someone is keeping records. On Remembrance Sunday the names are all read out by children, usually members of the various youth groups such as Scouts, Army Cadets etc. It's sobering to hear them all, many with the same surname, and realise how many local families were, and are, affected. I missed it this year because I was with Mum in Brighton hospital, so I'm glad I went to the briefer ceremony on 11th November.
You are right, Lizy. The names become so much more poignant when you know something of their lives. In my research into women recorded on Great War memorials I came across at least three instances of a brother and sister both losing their lives and another family of three sons and a daughter where the daughter's name is recorded between that of two of her brothers. There are believed to be at least two cases where a mother lost five sons.
It hardly bears thinking about. My mother lost one son - in an air accident, not a war - and when we were together for her birthday yesterday she said he should have been there. He died 30 years ago.
