30 Years of PLR

edited February 2009 in - Reading
Anyone else see the article on BBC Breakfast?

Some scary statistics on there.

Writer's earnings are 25% of the national average.

*James Patterson is contracted to 8 books a year - how does he do it?

    From the BBC's website.
  • Good to see Nora Roberts so high, though I wonder if they combined borrowings of her books written as Nora Roberts and those Nora Roberts writing as JD Robb.
  • The highest borrowed author in Scotland is Ian Rankin.
  • Article on back page/cover of March's Writers' News, too.
  • Has anyone here ever received a PLR payment?
  • Stirling, don't you read my posts? Hold on, I'll find the links ...

    That's one ...
  • I think I faintly remember . . .

That's another ... I wonder if there are any more.
  • Hmm. Are these links working for anyone?

    And this one.

I'll just see if I can find any more.

    That's probably the last.
  • If the links aren't working, let me know and I'll copy and paste the posts.

    2006
I've just received details of the latest public lending rights. 'The Loss of Innocence' was borrowed 136 times; and 'A Different Kind of Love' 38 times. This means that, for the first time, I qualify for a payment in respect of library borrowings.

    2007
I'm in the money ... Well, all right, £15.25 is hardly going to change my lifestyle. It's the PLR on my books. The Dandelion Clock was borrowed 85 times, while The Loss of Innocence was borrowed well over 100 times.

    2008
I've just been notified that I'll be receiving over £50 in respect of last year's Public Lending Right (payment for library borrowings). The Dandelion Clock brought in a massive £34!
So if you want to help a fellow Talkbacker, but don't want to shell out for the book, ask your local library to get hold of a copy for you.
You can read excerpts from all my books at

Public Lending Right July 2007 – June 2008 (from books borrowed from UK libraries)
Nearly £40, with The Dandelion Clock being borrowed 300 times; and The Loss of Innocence 150 times.
    Hooray!
  • Hi Jay and all

My PLR for 1 July 2007 to 30 June 2008

    "Railwaywomen" - - borrowed 281 times.
"Women of Victorian Sussex" --- borrowed 103 times (it's only in six Sussex libraries)

    Income £22.96.

The money doesn't matter to me. The most useful thing about PLR is to see how many people are borrowing your books!

Just contemplating that 281 people found "Railwaywomen" (which, let's face it, is a very specialist subject!) useful for their research confirms that the book was worth all the time and effort I put into it. I'd love to know who these readers were, whether they found it useful etc etc but even PLR doesn't tell you that!

I forgot to register my recent book (July 2008) so I've lost half a year on that one, but thanks to this thread acting as a prompt I will go and do so immediately.
  • Click on the links Jay posted and it rolls the page up to the top of the thread.
  • Helena, the libraries being used changed in July, so you might want to check whether your Sussex ones are still in the new listing. There's a link for the previous and current list on the PLR website for anyone who is interested.
  • Hi Helena glad to see things are going well for you!
  • Carol - I went online today and everything looks correct.

    Stirling - thanks
  • Good news.
