Should the media be allowed to show pictures of a crime scene, moments after a murder?

I don't think so; I think this is wrong. The media have hit a new low by appealing to voyeurism and sinking to a level that shouldn't be encouraged.

Comments

  • It is wrong. But how many will click on the link and what does that say about us?
  • No, is the answer. They shouldn't.
  • So if the images aren't in the public's interest, how many will complain?
  • Yesterday the Mail online showed a small picture of the women behind her son with the gun pointed at him as he was shooting (presumably at a firing range target).
  • That's sick.

I was thinking of complaining BB, but not sure who to go to. Is it the the press complaints commission?

I have to say I stumbled on this by accident - I went to read an article thinking 'future plot line maybe?'
  • You can post comments on the web page - I have, but they haven't appeared yet...
  • Checked the PPA. I'm going to email the editor tonight quoting the Press Code of Conduct:

    5. Intrusion into grief or shock

    i) In cases involving personal grief or shock, enquiries and approaches must be made with sympathy and discretion and publication handled sensitively. This should not restrict the right to report legal proceedings, such as inquests.

All comments appreciated, the more pressure the better!
  • Stirling- who is the PPA?

http://www.pcc.org.uk/faqs/index.html#top -this is for general info that effects the individual who may be the subject of intrusion.
  • If you mean the Periodical Publishers Association they cover magazines but not newspapers.
