  • Our Hidden Lives (The Everyday Diaries of a Forgotten Britain 1945-48) by Simon Garfield. Published in 2004.

I bought this book very cheaply somewhere last year and have only just started reading it, but I'm sure it will all be as engrossing as the first few pages.

It contains excerpts from the diaries kept by five people taking part in the Mass Observation project which started in the late 1930s.

It starts as the people of Britain are eagerly awaiting the official announcement of VE Day.

And how interesting to read that on the evening of 3rd May the rain turned to snow and settled on all the Spring flowers, but that "Three weeks ago the temperature was seventy in the shade"!!

I was tempted to make notes of extracts to put on here, but even now (I'm only up to page 21) there are just too many!
