Shellw - anyone - which magazines for tips etc

edited September 2010 in - Writing Problems
I'm getting into the swing of doing as Dorothy and ShellW suggested of writing letters and tips for sending to magazines - can anyone give me some ideas of the best ones to send to please? I have a letter for Woman (need to go to the newsagent and pick up a copy for their details) but where for cooking tips? lifestyle tips? etc

  • there's a womag site somewhere, Mutts, not sure where to send some of these letters as I don't buy the magazines (or see them) but others might be able to help.
My Weekly could be a good cooking one, lifestyle, WW or someone like that? TAB is worth looking at too. Yours?
  • Best tip I can give is to send a photo with your letter. I got Star letter and a poem published on the strength of the photos I sent. I suggest any womag, (mine were in My Weekly and Yours) plus it's worth looking at the TV mags and the monthlys. Best pays well for tips and so does Yours. I'd also say go for the ones that give cash or high street vouchers. All the best.
  • Mutley, you need to loiter in a newsagent's to get an idea of the type of thing each mag likes, but try Prima for cooking tips (pay £25) That's Life, Pick Me Up and TAB for general household and moneysaving tips and funnies. You get more with a photo - around £25 but up to £100
  • Agree with Casey about sending a photo if at all possible as this often more than doubles the reward. Take a Break accept tips by email as do Pick Me Up who pay a little less so guess which one I tend to try first. Also worth looking at any specialist magazines you have an interest in as they often offer prizes or gifts related to their topic.
  • I may be being thick here - a photo of me? or a photo relevant to the tip?
  • a photo relevant to the tip!
    Look for funny signs, too.
I found a sign for RAMPS
which someone had changed to TRAMPS
and my ex sat underneath it ...
  • Sorry I didn't make things clear. As an example I sent a tip for using the wire from wine bottles such as Rioja when wiring fruits and cones for Christmas decorations. All I did was add a photo of the wire "cage" from the bottle and a wired fir cone and I received £25 instead of £10 for an unillustatred tip and it only took minuted to set up the picture.
  • Wordy was that sent as a hard copy or by e-mail?
  • I sent it by email Carol.
  • Thanks.
That makes life easier all round if you have the option to e-mail.
  • keep those After Eight sachets and fill with loose tea. Put holes in sides with pin to make cheap tea bags.
Drill hole through side of fridge, that way you can check if the little light goes out when you shut the door.
Don't waste money on expensive binoculars, simply move closer to the object to want to observe.
Always ensure a seat on crowded bus or tube why shouting: JESUS WANTS ME FOR A SUNBEAM!! when you get on.

    Any good Mutley??
  • Marc - you are incorrigible - and I mean that as a compliment! :)
  • Send a photo of yourself, your children, your grandchildren, your dog, cat etc. All human interest. The ones I sent were a picture of me on holiday (letter about looking good at 60+ - not only Helen Mirren etc.) and an old photo of my sisters and I visiting Father christmas in 1949. The poem was about a Christmas visit to my grandmother. Hope this helps.

  • Oh Mrc B that made me laugh. Some comedian or other said the best way to reserve the seat next to you is look at anyone getting on, smile, and pat it invitingly. That makes me laugh whenever I think about it.
