I don't think you need to worry how old the photo is.
The photos on biographies or "autobiographies" of celebrities (and of established writers on the dustjackets of their books) were mostly taken years ago. They have also been vastly "improved".
You probably wouldn't recognise the people if you were standing right in front of them!
I think Ian Rankin is better looking in real life than on his dust jacket photo. I doubt I would recognise him walking around Edinburgh. I think the photo makes him look a little odd . . .
